Fitzpatrick Gallery is thrilled to participate in Tokyo Gendai Art Fair, with a solo presentation by Jill Mulleady.

In Jill Mulleady’s Monkeys Fighting in the Snow (2023), groups of macaques come into conflict in a hostile, empty, cold, frozen swamp. The large sacred-format painting - in shades of purple, gray, and blue, imagines the battle of a group of Japanese Macaca Fuscata, pitted relentlessly against each other in a composition reminiscent of Goya’s Fight with Cudgels (1819-1823), or Cats Fighting (1786-1788), and quoting the genre of Singerie.

Perhaps this may not be a scene with no witness; the gaze of six of the macaques in the foreground indicates an unknown, dissociated presence. Some of them stopped fighting, and broke up to create the scene; they only keep in their hands these snowballs that they have fashioned as weapons of war. The others are above ground, floating in a cold wind, in the middle of the battle, disassociating themselves from the logic of perspective. In a dash, one turns on the other, while another engages in hand-to-hand combat; Mulleady’s Monkeys Fighting in the Snow is a running, pushing, quasi-erotic speed of animal instincts in a frame that engages in violent action; in a slow-motion confrontation that turns lustful.
