Editor’s note

PAINTING BACKDROP PICTURE is my first monograph and contains over 160 paintings made over the last decade. This title refers to the words I have used to describe my work as it has developed. The images (with the exception of two or three) are laid out in chronological order and are scaled in relation to their original size to give a sense of proportion. They have been arranged in collaboration with the graphic designers Norm. Immense gratitude to Amy Sillman for her introductory text and our ongoing dialogue. These works on canvas are extra large, and are folded up before and after being exhibited. They have been seen by only few people in institutions and galleries, in my studio or in private homes.
The reason why I choose to work in large formats is because it has allowed me to include all the different disciplines I am interested in, such as modern dance, performance art, theatre or set design.
