Awake, while you’re dreaming

May 31, 2015

Jun 06, 2015

A preface to Hannah Weinberger’s practice are the incidental background noises generated by comings and goings. The atmospheric hums that people make while seated at tables with glass and metal at their fingertips. The percussion of people moving in small formations, thumping the floor with their feet. The indistinct glimpses we capture. Collaging these simple means, Weinberger streamlines social cacophony into ephemeral atmospheres unburdened by dramatic crescendos.

For “Awake, while you’re dreaming” Weinberger uses an empty house, rather than a gallery to project her moving images and audio tracks. The former residence of gallerists Alex Freedman and Robbie Fitzpatrick, this site-specific, multi-channel audio-video installation serves as a closing event for this place, which has served as a venue for events, parties, and a residency for artists since the inauguration of Freedman Fitzpatrick.

Melding field recordings and footage shot throughout Los Angeles with documentation of past events at 3721 Evans, Weinberger’s installation amplifies empty rooms into subtly shifting landscapes of memory. Coalescing with our own to fabricate infinite associate impressions, the exhibition is not a finale or a eulogy, but a moment that’s very existence is intrinsically linked to the time and place in which it comes into being.
